Stockport County Under 19's 4 FC Halifax 4 ( Halifax win 3-2 on penalties) League Cup- 6 November 2017
Fortune did not favour the brave this afternoon when County went down 3-2 on penalties to FC Halifax Town, after a pulsating encounter that finished 4-4 after 90 minutes.
Make no
mistake about it, this Halifax side were a very tough nut to crack indeed,
having won four of their last 5 games and amassed 21 goals in doing so ,with
very few conceded.
If the Jeremiahs in our midst were therefore
expecting a drubbing for County, this very definitely did not happen, but the
opening minutes did show us how together the Yorkshire lads were as a team, and
the County defence ...expertly marshalled by Jordan Downing , and protected
throughout by Will Holt and Jordan Peach in midfield, responded well, albeit
that keeper Alex Gorse was called on to make a couple of decent saves.
Alex Gorse makes a decent save. |
Luckily...in
the main Town's finishing was not matching the quality of their approach play ,but
they had enough about them to snatch the lead with a well executed goal with 15
minutes on the clock.
It took
County just 4 minutes to make that Halifax lead disappear, and it was a
brilliant effort from Szymon Czubik that did it, and it signalled the start of
a up-turn in County's play, and with Czubik in excellent form another goal
always looked a possibility.
Czubik a live wire ! |
Czubik makes it 1-1 |
County finished the half on the attack , having looked the sharper outfit going forward by that time, and 1-1 ..against this Halifax side, was a pretty useful position to be in at the break.
With Alex
Jackson to the fore , and full backs Callum Hewitt and Josh Robinson pushing on
down the flanks, County began the second half as they had ended the first- but
somehow managed to leak a goal as an up and under from way out wide was forced
home midst a melee in the County box.
Jackson working hard. |
That was a
shock....but it took County little time to get back in it, getting their reward 62 minutes in , when
Jackson took advantage of some brilliantly opportunist work from Czubik to slam
the equaliser home.
Jackson in good form. |
County were
on top now and the pressure mounted on Halifax , and it was no surprise when
County took the lead.
Again Czubik
was the catalyst- making up for a silly booking moments earlier to steal possession
in an improbable fashion, before sliding the neatest of passes inside to Terry
Wallace , who forced the ball home under pressure.
Town under pressure |
Wallace took
a knock shortly after this , and was replaced by Sadji El Hassam.
County were
pushing on with a vengeance now - Robinson in fine form surging down the left
wing in spectacular fashion.
It was
simply no surprise at all when County increased their lead, and this was the
best goal of the game- started by Jackson, and gloriously finished by Ollie
Forshaw who volleyed home from the edge of the box.
Ollie makes it 4-2 with 7 mins kleft. |
There were
just 7 minutes left when that one went in, and it looked like County's
game....but...it wasn't...as just 3 minutes later Halifax made it 4-3, and one minute on equalised
again .
The last 3
minutes saw County press for the winner , with Holt and Jackson both seeing
shots saved in the dying embers of normal time, by the Town keeper, but it
stayed 4-4 at the final whistle.
The game was
decided by penalties, and County's takers( in order) were....
Alex Jackson
, Will Holt, Callum Hewitt, Sadji El Hassam, Szymon Czubik.
And here's
how it went......
Really good
game that , one which County will feel unlucky not to have won, but against a
team with a reputation it was no disgrace .... plenty to come from these County lads for
sure!
