Memorial Day 2019
Another year, and another uniquely County
tradition was enacted in the streets and on the hills of Cheshire today , as
County supporters, through organiser Ian Lancashire, summoned all of a blue
footballing persuasion to the Royal Scot in Marple Bridge in celebration and
commemoration of those County supporters no longer with us.
Lancs` pre-event weather forecast
looked exceedingly optimistic , when read on Marionsboard on Thursday evening,
but the event was favoured with a fulsome quantity of sunshine, and the writers
multiple added layers happily remained in his bag throughout.
The whole thing started
at 12 noon,
and there were already a fair few populating the seating outside and inside the
bar as yours truly arrived.
The first thing to strike the eye was
the blue and white canopy of balloons secured at the entrance to the Royal Scot,
and we had Matt Brown to thank for that piece of welcome initiative.
Lancs was busy getting arrivers to
sign the `book of remembrance which we did readily.
An early bird was the Supporters Cooperative
Chair – Pete Towey , and Pete had brought the Cooperatives commemorative
wreath.
It was immediately obvious that a
blunder had been made by myself as the chippy over the road was offering an
irresistible special of `pie, chips and gravy` for £3.20- I had already eaten!
A meeting of minds next twixt drivers
of two very large vehicles ( going the opposite way to one another) on the
nations narrowest high street entertained for a while,
before with numbers
building somewhere close to max, Lancs summoned all to the bar for the
traditional toast to those who have passed.
There was a great gathering again,
with the Club represented by Steve Bellis and Simon Dawson, and it all went off
superbly well.
Off then up the hill, that was…as
expected…..steeper than last year, to the grave side of John Hall, where simple
but moving eulogy`s were made by Ged Gibbons, Steve Bellis, and Pete Towey!
Following a minute`s silence it was
back to the Royal Scot to complete the circle with a second toast and salute to
all County fans who have departed this world.
That was , as a few have said more
than once, so typically County, and such a splendid part of what our eternally
inclusive family is about!
Long may it be so!
