County Memorial Day 2018
Memorial Day- Friday 3 August 2018
Since
inception this blog has proudly had as a masthead the following…
` Stockport
County….More Than Just a Football Club` and never has this seemed to be more
appropriate than today when County
Supporters reminded us just how special they are!
Today was the
18th occasion since the
wonderful, County tradition, that is County Memorial Day` was first
initiated by County Supporters to honour
the memory of every County supporter, player, staff member or management who
are no longer with us.

The Day has
been sustained by County supporters annually, and it usually takes place
at the Royal Scot public house , Marple Bridge on the last Friday before
the season starts.
County
supporters made their way to the venue by hook ..crook or bus , this time, answering the call from Ian
Lancashire who ,as usual, had the day mapped out meticulously.
Caz Burt with Wreath from the Supporters Cooperative |
One of the
first to arrive was Caz Burt Independent Secretary to the Stockport County
Supporters Cooperative, and Caz had a suitable wreath from the Cooperative for
the occasion.
Slow at first..... |
If numbers
were slowish to assemble, by around 1.30 the tables outside the pub were pretty
much fully occupied and soon Ian had his list of those wishing to join the
communal toast to the deceased, and this included the names of Steve Bellis and
Simon Dawson who were present representing the Club!
Mick Mc signs for the toast.... |
Around 2
o`clock it was off inside for the first toast and a rousing chorus or two of
the Scarf.
Summoned to the Toast by Pete |
That was a
highlight of course, but more was to follow as the whole party made their way
up the cruellest of hills to the cemetery and the Captain`s grave.
The Captain’s
grave was chosen to represent all departed County fans, and the whole party was
soon gathered around the grave side where the Supporters Cooperative Chair Pete
Towey gave the eulogy.
With Ged
Gibbon laying and lighting a candle , and others sprinkling holy water, it was
time for a minutes silence which was immaculately observed.
A final few
words from Steve Bellis from the Club ,which were well received, and it was
back to the pub for a final toast….and it must be said an altogether better
rendering of the Scarf!
The writer
made his excuses and left at 3 o`clock, but the event was still going strong as
I headed for the hedgemobile.
More Than
Just a Football Club…………..Absolutely!
