This week in County History Part 8 ... 1932
We go back to this week from 96 years ago to feature in the latest edition of this hopefully popular addition to the blog.
On the 7th October 1932 one of the local Stockport weekly newspapers, the Stockport Advertiser, was reflecting on the founder members of the club. Their article stated that the pioneers of the soccer code in Stockport included Sam Riley and his brother Billy. Sam Riley had been reported as being confined to bed during that summer and a fund raising campaign for him was organised at the time.
Reporting on recent games they said that at Halifax, a penalty was awarded to the home side for a foul by Fred Jenkinson on Davies when the score was 1-0 in the first half. Betteridge took the spot kick but County stopper Tommy Gale (SCAN 384) saved and the visitors went on to win 3-1 going third in the table as a result. Gale had joined the Hatters from our opponents this weekend .....Barnsley.
In another away game a couple of days earlier at Carlisle United on Thursday ,the match was played with no interval, the teams just swapped ends at the half time whistle - probably due to the light in those days before floodlights.
The weekends games on Saturday 8th October saw our Cheshire rivals from the other end of the River Mersey, Tranmere Rovers in town.
The Hatters established a 2-0 half time lead before going on to a three goal victory with our scorers being (in no particular order) Ted Humpish, Jimmy Stevenson and Joe Taylor.

#The attendance was just 3,110 as County climbed to second place in a division where only the eventual champions would gain promotion.
County: Tommy Gale, Fred Jenkinson, Eddie Lloyd, Teddy Humpish, George Carr, Eddie Vincent, Jabez Foulkes, Jimmy Stevenson, Joe Griffiths, Joe Taylor and Percy Downes
Tranmere: Bert Gray, Dick Platt, Arthur Carvell, Teddy Barton, Bert Fishwick, Reg Spencer, Tom McMurray, Farewell Watts, Bunny Bell, Bert Whitehurst and Fred Urmson
Stevenson (SCAN 403 ) would end up at the club through to the late 1960s having returned after a short time with Walsall to coach at various levels with County and helped out in various roles over the years.
The goals made County the top scorers to date in Division Three (North).
The Reserves were playing in the main Northern reserve league in those days - the Central League - and their game that weekend was at Hillsborough home of Sheffield Wednesday. With no particular delight the home programme stated that County have had a disastrous start to their Central League season with no win in eight games.
This match did nothing to get the points tally any higher, but at least we made a game of it only losing 3-2 despite having the then rare occurance ,towards the end of the game ,of a player being sent off in Johnman (SCAN 408). His punishment looks a little odd in these days of fixed number of games bans, with the authorities issuing a 28 day suspension.

A Norman Beedles penalty and a goal from Fred Jones were the main County contributors.
County Reserves: Jimmy McGann, John Johnman, Norman Beedles, Charlie Robinson, Jack Barber, Harold Johnson, William Hutchinson, G Harlow, Albert Lambourne, Fred Jones and Freddie Howe
We will quickly skip over the 'A' team match in the Manchester League as the Hatters youngsters went down to a 1-6 home defeat to Manchester City.
I have managed to get a full set of page scans from the Tranmere prog and have passed them on to old hedgie ,so hopefully he will be able to include a few of them in a form where you can have a read if your sight is good. Often the most fascinating feature of these old programmes are the adverts for local businesses and attractions - most long gone from the town.
Just to note any mistakes in the above is all my own work - no AI has been used to produce this missive, If you ever have any corrections or additional info regarding these blog entries feel free to drop me a line at info@gogogocounty.org - Perhaps your thoughts might lead to follow up features. Finally my Barnsley programme article for the Barnsley game covers the week we held top flight QPR to a League Cup second leg draw.
