County had just started a season that would end in promotion in the only match we have won at Wembley. But back to mid August and the local paper was reflecting back on the season's opener as it reported that Manager Jim Gannon had moved on the eve of the game to add Conrad Logan, James Smith and Dom Blizzard to his squad.

 

That game had seen us beat Dagenham and Redbridge in their Football League debut, and the paper reflected that the Manager was delighted with the contribution of all three in the opening game victory but specific mention was made of goalkeeper Conrad Logan who he signed after 18 months of trying.

 

It also mentioned that a proposed loan deal for fellow keeper Adam Legzdins had been abandoned although he had figured in three pre-season games. Incidentally Legzdins  was last spotted in Scotland with Dundee  back in 21-22. The County Manager said he had not ruled out a return for the Birmingham City stopper.

 

Plenty of those at the game had headed over to All Saints Church in Totley. on the eve of the match to  be among hundreds of mourners gathered to say a final farewell to sporting hero Danny Bergara.

 


 

 

 

Our first round League Cup tie took place at Edgeley Park on Tuesday 14th August.

Cheshire rivals Tranmere Rovers were the opposition and unlike the current season the Hatters made progress with a 1-0 victory. The  3499 crowd were made to wait though as the winner came from  Matty McNeil after 84 minutes.

 


 

 

That evening's teams were:

County: Conrad Logan, James Smith, Ashley Williams, Gareth Owen, Paul Tierney, Jason Taylor, David Poole (Anthony Pilkington), Gary Dicker (Dominic Blizzard), Adam Griffin (Liam Dickinson), Anthony Elding and Matty McNeil. Unused Sub(s): Chris Adamson, Adam Proudlock

Rovers: Danny Coyne, Robbie Stockdale, Ben Chorley, Ian Goodison, Shane Cansdell-Sheriff, Paul McLaren, Steve Jennings, Chris Shuker (Craig Curran), Calvin Zola, Steve Davies and Chris Greenacre (Gareth Taylor). Unused Sub(s): John Achterberg, Antony Kay, John Mullin

Somewhat unusually there were no future or former County men in the visitors line-up.

 

The following day Amari Morgan-Smith was added to the squad.  The 18 year old Wolverhampton born forward came in from Crewe Alexandra after a trial period. Now of course a veteran he made his debut for FC Halifax Town in last weekends National League opener at Forest Green.

 

 


 

 

The first away League match of the season saw a trip to Chesterfield's old ground at Saltergate.   County maintained their unbeaten start to the fledgeling season thanks to a Liam Dickinson goal on 64 minutes.

 

 


 

 

 

 Sadly they could could not retain their advantage and Jack Lester levelled a quarter of an hour later to leave the final score at 1-1.

Gray had played a single game for the Hatters at Gillingham some seven years earlier.

This day will rank in infamy    with some of the darkest in our Club`s history- the owners of Stockport County have sacked Jim Gannon…..a dreadful decision......... totally bereft of merit, and one heralded by a shamefully inadequate announcement, as insulting to County fans as it is to Jim. Champions under Jim in our last completed season, fourth in the league after as impressive a win as any Club Chair could wish to witness from his team on Tuesday, despite the interrupted nature of the current season, and clearly playing well, so this smacks of something other than prudence or good decision making and as for being rational and fair………….. Two Great Clubs .... 110 Years on........

Well....a whole lot can happen in 110 years....... On 2 September 1905 Stockport County and Chelsea FC met at Edgeley Park. For County it was their first game back in the Football League whilst for our visitors it was their first ever game in the League.   County 1905 , from `Pictorial History` by Phil Brennan & Richard Harnwell History records the facts of the day`s events as a 1-0 win for County , whilst accounts of the day tend to vary a tad..... Peter Freeman & Richard Harnwell's   excellent `Stockport County- A Complete Record' briefly records... ` County`s first game back in the Second Division was against another elected club, Chelsea. Wrexham 1 Stockport County 2 ( Vanarama National League) 31 August 2019

“Where`s the goals gonna come from”-is a familiar refrain from those wanting County to ship in a new striker every other week, and County once again fully answered that one with “ from almost everywhere” as goals from defenders Sam Minihan and Ash Palmer secured all the points at the Racecourse Ground today against Wrexham. A 2-0 County lead at half time seemed to signal a rout, but Wrexham fought well upon the re-start and made a real match of it , albeit that an imperious display by County`s superb back line limited them largely to shots from distance. The defensive display from JG`s boys, in the second 45 minutes, if somewhat hard on the nerves, was again excellent , but a late goal to the Welshmen made the last few minutes tenser than perhaps they should have been.
