This was a first visit to the magnificent Allianz stadium next to the
cricket ground (the less said the better) with Sydney challenging to top the
league with a game in hand but 2 points behind Auckland. The A-League has 10
teams from Australia and 2 from New Zealand. The club was formed in
2004 as Sydney’s original A-League club and have won 34 trophies across all
domestic and international competitions making them the most successful club.
Wellington Phoenix turned out in white and green with Sydney in pale blue.
There was a great atmosphere from the Cove behind the goal and a decent
attendance even 'though it's school holidays here. Transport connections are
good by road or tram and train.
Sydney had 67 % possession even though they played the second half with 10 men
but ultimately didn't take their chances. All in all it was a well-deserved
win for the Phoenix.
A visit to the club shop was on the cards and didn't disappoint with a shirt
being added to the collection.
Some key moments -
On 8 mins Carlo Armiento shot turned round the post by Sydney GK Devenish
6 mins later Sydney miss a golden chance as Tiago Quintal's cross is missed by
2 Sydney players and goes out
Carlo Armiento opens the scoring for Wellington on 30 mins from a free kick
which was deflected into the goal wrongfooting the Sydney keeper.
On 43 mins the game changed with Sydney's Rhys Youelly red carded for a studs
up lunging tackle on Ramy Najjarine's ankle. He's received a 3-match suspension
which the club are appealing.
58 Alex Grants shoots narrowly missing the goal.
Wellington scored a second on 65' with unmarked Isaac Hughes heading home from
a cross provided by Alex Rufer.
66 Manjrekar James made a goal line clearance with his head getting clobbered
in the process.
Sydney did score thru Alex Popavic on 90' but it was disallowed with Alex Grant
offside.
