Memorial Day 2024

The Royal Scot in Marple Bridge is well known to Stockport County supporters, and the hostelry again played host to a large number of them who were set on celebrating the 23rd Memorial Day.

In time honoured fashion they paid fulsome tribute to those members of the County Family who are no longer with us, and organiser Ian Lancashire must have been well pleased with the turn out as once again County supporters made the effort and went out of their way to salute past friends and members of the County Family.

The Club were represented by Club President Steve Bellis who arrived early to once again provide a wreath tribute..............

.............. as did  Independent Secretary Cath Shanley on behalf of the Supporters Cooperative.

It was a nice surprise to see a former County player of mesmerising talents ….Tony Hancock arrive and quickly mingle affably.

The first toast this year was arranged for 2.30 whence most headed inside the pub to salute all who are no longer with us.

As usual done with great verve and  the utmost sincerity-well done all!

It was time of course then to contemplate heading up `that hill` to the grave of deceased County supporter John Hall who died 24 years ago today on 9 August 2000- John`s grave serves as a rallying point on the day before County`s first game of the season- the toasts, tributes etc made in the direction of John`s grave are aimed at ALL County supporters, players and  staff now departed this life.

It was good to see Kimberley and Faith quick to ensure the wreaths reached the hilltop grave- the girls did a brilliant job again- thanks both!

Having climbed the hill,  Ged Gibbons gave the eulogy which was well received…..

….as were  Tony Hancock`s words delivered as he deputised for the hard working Steve Bellis who had to attend a funeral…

There was time for Ian to call for a minutes silence( beautifully observed !).....

Then it was back down the hill next, then into the Royal Scot for the final toasts….

All in all another uniquely County event- a fitting tribute to  deceased County fans by County fans- as Tony Hancock said “ County supporters should be proud of themselves “

Well done everyone- here`s to next year!
