Steve Massey

Steve Massey.

My phone `pinged` – it was County Legend John Fitzpatrick and John was excited having witnessed Steve Massey receive his County cap on the pitch at Edgeley Park at half time in the game with Tranmere Rovers and been absolutely delighted when Steve took time out to come over and have a word!

Steve made 114 appearances for County scoring 20 goals- a number that did not come close to acknowledging how wholehearted a player Steve was!

Indeed, Steve was all action, and scored on his County debut 74/75 in a 2-1 win over Darlington and is still the youngest ever County goal scorer at 16 years and 11 months- a very good player for County in the 70`s when times were hard and the team did not always finish that far up Division 4, having to seek re-election to the Football League in 75-76 and a couple more times earlier that decade despite having some terrific County heroes in their midst at one time or another- Ken Fogarty ( a wonderfully combative footballer),Barney Daniels a goal scorer of great promise who was gone almost before he arrived at EP, the immense player that was Terry Park , the fantastic Johnny Price and my favourite County player of all time Alan Ogley – quite simply the best man ever to don a goal keepers jersey !

.

I apologise at this point as I know I have missed others of real quality out , but the point I was trying to make was that  it was not all hard knocks for County then , the club had some exciting talents to call on and Steve was quite definitely one of them. And off the park the Club still had the likes of Mike Yarwood a top star headlining on TV week in week out , as Honorary Vice President . Here you can see, in this image stolen from The Scarf My Father Wore, Steve holding Mike`s left arm midst some jolly 70`s japes on the hallowed turf!

If that pic gives a flavour of Steve at County, you could do worse than buy his excellent book `Where`s My Towel ?`- you will not be disappointed!

( There`s also an outlet at Amazon UK  which sells the book at a reasonable price)

It was great to see Steve back at Edgeley Park again looking so good -one of the growing number of ex County players that the Club are bringing back to rightly honour.

They are a vital part of County history, and we forget their struggles and achievements at our peril!
