County Challenge 2 by Ian Watts
Time for
another challenge, this one should be a little easier for some of you.
Although at
times it only seems like yesterday, it is in fact over 8 years since that
memorable Wembley win against upcoming friendly opponents Rochdale.
Such was the
team's form during the 2007-08 season run-in, the opening goal for Dale that
Monday didn't affect the confidence most of County's following had about the
result, So it proved, as , a first half
own goal, , followed by crackers from Anthony Pilkington and Liam Dickinson,
put the Hatters 3-1 ahead, before a consolation for the Lancashire side in the
last 15 minutes.
The men who
took County to promotion on the Wembley turf that day were:
Conrad
Logan, James Smith, Gareth Owen, Jimmy McNulty, Michael Rose, Gary Dicker,
Stephen Gleeson (sub Leon McSweeney), Tommy Rowe, Paul Turnbull, Anthony
Pilkington and Liam Dickinson (sub Matty McNeil).
Can you
match the names above with the clubs they came to County , from using the list
below?:
Cork City -
Leicester City - Liverpool - Macclesfield Town (x2) - Myerscough College -
Oldham Athletic - University College Dublin - Wolverhampton Wanderers - Woodley
Sports - Yeovil Town - Youth Team(x2)
The answers to
the first challenge are:
Keith
Alexander(Saint Lucia), Liam Bridcutt(Scotland), Craig Davies(Wales), Laurent
D'Jaffo(Benin), Kevin Francis(St Kitts and Nevis), Tryggvi Gudmundsson(Iceland(),
Paul Gundani, (Zimbabwe ), Carl Ikeme(Nigeria), Brad Jones(Australia), Shefki
Kuqi(Finland(), Li Ming(China), Martin Nash(Canada), Anthony Pilkington(Republic
of Ireland), Mark Poom(Estonia), Ron Staniforth(England), Paul Williams(Northern
Ireland)
Aside from the
senior names who are involved in National sides, there are still occasional
ex-County youngsters in International action. Most recently Frickley's Jameel
Ible, a team mate of recent signing Josh Amis during his time in the clubs
youth set-up, looked to add to his caps tally for St Kitts and Nevis during the
summer.
