Ian Watts gives us what he hopes will be the first of a series of previews of County's pre-season games .......


A nice trip to Halifax to swelter in the mid-day sun, then for some a dash to watch a game in Russia - a country which on my only visit some 28 years ago or so was generally even hotter. For food options there seems to be some sort of Farmer's market opening in Halifax tomorrow, but I will leave it to you to look that one up on the internet if interested.

It will be the first game for both sides so no real info on line-ups. Town have recruited from various places during the summer with  Cameron King adding Yorkshire to a CV that includes Norwich, Dublin and Kings Lynn.

Midfielder Sanmi Odelusi who started at Bolton and has since been with both Rochdale and Wigan,  joins from Cheltenham.......

.......whilst defender Jacob Hanson returns for a second loan spell from Bradford City, and Jordan Preston is, like County's Nyal Bell one of several to leave Gateshead since last season, the Head apparently having financial troubles.

A danger man could be new Hatters   Ash Palmer and Frank Mulhern teammate at Guiseley last season Dayle Southwell, who has previously scored against County in three games for Boston  United.

Simply Disgraceful ! This day will rank in infamy    with some of the darkest in our Club`s history- the owners of Stockport County have sacked Jim Gannon…..a dreadful decision......... totally bereft of merit, and one heralded by a shamefully inadequate announcement, as insulting to County fans as it is to Jim. Champions under Jim in our last completed season, fourth in the league after as impressive a win as any Club Chair could wish to witness from his team on Tuesday, despite the interrupted nature of the current season, and clearly playing well, so this smacks of something other than prudence or good decision making and as for being rational and fair………….. Sadly the Club`s owners rather added to the anger their foolish decision has already triggered, by stating that the decision was not results based, but based on `culture`.   Jim is a proven quality Manager , who knows what it takes to make County tick, has done so many times in the past, and   has forgotten more about Co

Wrexham 1 Stockport County 2 ( Vanarama National League) 31 August 2019

“Where`s the goals gonna come from”-is a familiar refrain from those wanting County to ship in a new striker every other week, and County once again fully answered that one with “ from almost everywhere” as goals from defenders Sam Minihan and Ash Palmer secured all the points at the Racecourse Ground today against Wrexham. A 2-0 County lead at half time seemed to signal a rout, but Wrexham fought well upon the re-start and made a real match of it , albeit that an imperious display by County`s superb back line limited them largely to shots from distance. The defensive display from JG`s boys, in the second 45 minutes, if somewhat hard on the nerves, was again excellent , but a late goal to the Welshmen made the last few minutes tenser than perhaps they should have been. Stockport County 4 Accrington Stanley 2 ( Football League 2) Saturday 20 April 2024

          A friend captured the situation nicely as we both descended the steps at the Cheadle End “ there are not many days like that” he said ,and he hit the spot perfectly, we had both just come away from a County game that finished as a party as County disposed of the challenge from Accrington Stanley with a comfortable 4-2 win, and the old place dissolved in a glorious mix of excitement, and emotion as the blues were presented with the League 2 Championship trophy! I say that it was comfortable, but I thought Accrington made a good fist of competing at times, in the end beaten by another clutch of top-class goals- 2 from Wootton , who I thought edged M.O.M ,and one each from   Evans and Sarcevic which did the biz for Dave Challinor`s boys. Their 8 th win in succession took County`s points tally with one match remaining to a mammoth 92 points- still 7 clear of the rest and set up a spectacularly good party on the pitch after the final whistle -more on this later in the repor
