As  must see events go, Saturday’s SCAN Reunion of the heroic County 72/73 team was right up there!
For months….nay years ………SCAN has worked on bringing this famous group of Cup fighters together and thanks to the efforts of Marcus Heap, Ian Watts and Des Hinks this finally came to pass, some would say fittingly in the adopted home of Stockport County supporters- the Bungalow on Hardcastle Road.

A fantastic effort ensured that 17 players were enticed to Edgeley Park for the game v Tamworth FC, along with family members representing players now sadly no longer with us.
The party of 62 were entertained and enjoyed corporate hospitality before the game, and after they had seen County get substantially Marsdened, went post haste to the Bung where SCAN had plans for them.

The place was packed shortly after 5pm and around 6 the event commenced with Marcus Heap opening proceedings in his inimitable style! No one does this better than Marcus who treats his subject with the respect it deserves.
So ……opening remarks done/dusted Marcus then  brought a series of famous faces into the main  Bung room. There was an ovation for Johnnie Griffiths that had him beaming happily. John was followed by `the White Pele’ Ian Davidson, then Paul Hart who looked every bit as commanding a figure as he did in his playing and managerial days….right through the 17 they went …all entering and taking their seats in front of the stage, and it was as if the roof might cave in on top of us when Alan Ogley and Hugh Ryden made their entrances, such was the appreciative noise generated by the supporters to greet their heroes!

Hugh Ryden- great value at the mike!
Marcus got the  likes of Alan Ogley, Hugh Ryden, Ray Charter , Paul Hart ,Steve Fleet, Johnnie Griffiths, Tommy Spratt and Malc Russell to say a few words and the move proved to be inspirational......

..... with good humour abounding as the team recalled the exploits of 43 years ago. Ray Charter having made the trip from Oz certainly did not waste his few hours back in the spotlight, with a lively and entertaining offering that had the room rocking with laughter, whilst the Russell, Spratt,Ogley combo ( impishly interrupted by Steve Fleet at one point) fed the room tasty anecdote after tasty anecdote that had us all engrossed.

Steve Fleet takes the mike....

The next part of the evening involved presentations ,by the supporters, to the team of 72/73, and each player, or family representative was presented with a wax stamped , framed professionally calligraphered SCAN Certificate….

First off it was Ian Davidson who received his certificate from Gordon Cundill ....

Ian Lawther's family then stepped up, receiving their certificate from Marcus.....

Mike O`Brien then presented to Les Ormrod......

Steve Fleet received his from Tim Brown.....

and Lancs to do the honours for Eddie Garbett.....

The place was buzzing now ,and on it went with Duncan Heap presenting to Paul Hart....

Steve Potter  obliged with Malcolm Russell....

Tommy Spratt received his certificate from Dave Marchbank...

John Griffiths from Phil Robinson....

A special presentation came next to Alan Ogley, who had already been presented with his SCAN Certificate on a previous occasion, and his Grandson joined Alan on stage to receive from Des Hinks with the emotions running high....

On it went with John Whelan presenting to the family of Jim Mulvaney.....

Derek Bailey presenting to Steve Crowther...

Les Braithwaite did the honours for Freddie Ingham...

With just 2 presentations left now, it fell to Paul Ward to hand Ian Broomfield's certificate over.....

before Tommy Spratt made the final presentation to Brian Doyle's family....

With some more closing words from Marcus, and a rousing response from Alan Ogley on behalf of the 72/73 boys, a wonderful occasion was finally over.

It really was a great effort and a terrific evening, but do not take my word for it take a look at the video...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKENpdSZT2E
